What Do I Need to Purchase a Firearm?

Handgun Purchase Requirements

Valid Identification:

  • Valid CA Driver’s License, or
  • CA Identification Card, or
  • Department of Defense ID

If your driver’s license shows “Federal Limits Apply”, you must also provide one of the following: valid U.S. passport, birth certificate, green card, or certificate of naturalization. If the name on your birth certificate does not match your current name, you must provide legal documentation of the name change.

Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC):

A valid FSC is required. Exemptions include:

  • Valid CCW permit from California
  • Guard Card
  • Law Enforcement Officer badge/ID
  • Active or retired military service

Second Proof of Residency (one of the following):

  • Current DMV vehicle registration
  • Utility bill under your name (within last 90 days, landline only)
  • State-issued license (e.g. Guard Card, fishing/hunting license)
  • Residential lease agreement
  • Property deed
  • CCW permit from any state

Note: If your driver’s license address is not current, your second proof of residency must be a government-issued document. Municipal utility bills and handwritten documents will not be accepted.


Rifle / Shotgun / Receiver Purchase Requirements

Valid Identification:

  • Valid CA Driver’s License, or
  • CA Identification Card, or
  • Department of Defense ID

Citizenship documentation required if DL shows “Federal Limits Apply.”

Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC):

A valid FSC is required. A valid hunting license also qualifies as an exemption for long gun purchases. Test available at our store.

Second Proof of Residency:

Only required if your driver’s license address is not current. Must be a government-issued document.


Private Party Transfer (PPT)

Both buyer and seller must hold a California ID (or military ID with PCS orders). Handguns sold through PPT are exempt from the California Handgun Roster restrictions and the one-in-thirty-day purchase limit (except in Los Angeles).


Additional Information

  • The 10-day waiting period begins upon DROS submission
  • A safety device (cable lock or trigger lock) is required for all firearms sales
  • Our website inventory feed is approximately 3 hours delayed from real-time availability
